THOMASMATTHEWWILKINS
“Well, tell me a little about yourself. What’s your name?”
My name is Thomas Matthew Wilkins. Most people just call me Tom, sometimes Tommy, though. I think I was named after a grandfather, at least for my first name. I'm pretty sure my mom just liked Matthew, though.
“Next question, how has your High School career gone thus far?”
Oh, I love school. I'm good at it. I'm a freshman, and I'm just starting high school. So that's a little scary. But I've always loved school. Mostly because I like reading and studying. And I guess that being so liked by teachers helped. I mean, they liked me. I think it's because I try hard. I get good grades, because of that. I always do my homework, and it's on time. I've been called a teacher's pet before, but that doesn't really bother me. I mean, so what if other kids make fun of me? If I'm smart, and the teacher likes me, then when I'm in trouble, I'm more likely to be able to get out of it. It's actually a good idea to be the good kid. If the teachers trust you, they give you more freedom. Not that I've ever taken advantage of that! But I know others who have. And I know it's possible. That's all.
I do like all my classes, though history is my favorite, with English being a close second. Math and science are okay, but I don't think they're as much fun. I was actually going to be put into all advanced classes, this year. I'd worked hard for it. There were weekends where I stayed inside for the whole time, and just studied. Not even sleeping. I hope that I still get some kind of advanced classes here. I don't want to be stuck in regular classes, just because I messed up. I'd get bored in normal classes.
“What did you do when you weren't in school? Any hobbies or sports, anything like that?”
Well, I like studying. I read a lot in my spare time. Does that count as a hobby? I used to go to the library. I'd just go, and get a book, and hide in some dusty corner no one else ever went to. It was pretty much my favorite thing to do. I read all kinds of things, though classical literature and history books are my favorite. I really liked finding books about obscure historical things, and reading them. Once, I spent a whole Saturday in the library, reading a six hundred page book on the military history of the Ottoman Empire. That was a pretty good day. It might sound boring, but it's fun. Or at least I think so.
Besides that, I didn't do much. I mean, sometimes I'd go play sports with other guys in the neighborhood, but mostly, I was inside. I didn't go out of my way to hang out with them, and they didn't go out of their way to hang out with me. My mother and their mothers sometimes tried to push it, and then we would hang out. But... I dunno. Besides reading, and sometimes hanging out with the other guys, I didn't do much. I don't like parties very much. And I'm not the most social. I can be a bit of a loner, I've been told.
“Family and friends are pretty important. Tell me about them. How are your relationships with them?”
Family is easier than friends, so I'll tell you about them first. I've got my mom, and I love her a lot. We get along pretty well. I've never been much trouble, besides being so quiet. So she and I don't really have any problems. When I'm at home, she likes to take care of me. Making sure I eat regularly, and sleep, because if she doesn't, I might just read for hours on end and not do either. I'm lucky to have her, I guess.
I don't really know my dad. I mean, I was only nine when we left, because he hurt Liam. I mean, I do remember how bad he was. He drank, for as long as I can remember. He'd hit us too. Not just Liam and I, but Mom too. That always made me mad. My mom is amazing. She doesn't deserve to be hit. Anyway, I haven't seen him since I was nine, and that's fine by me.
My favorite person, though, is my big brother. Liam. He's the best. He's here too. But anyway, I look up to him more than anyone. It's a little embarrassing to say this, but he's my best friend. Don't tell anyone, but he's why I decided to come here. I got into trouble for the first time, just so I could be here. I mean... It was lonely, without him. I don't have any other friends, and Mom had gotten overbearing since he was gone. I missed my brother. Don't tell anyone I said that!
Anyway, I don't really have any friends. I mean, there are some guys in the neighborhood I hung out with sometimes, but we weren't really friends. At school, I didn't really hang out with anyone. I preferred spending my time reading and studying, not socializing. You can call me a loser, or whatever, but I'm a geek, and I'm proud.
“Thank you for sharing that with me. So those are your family and friends, what about yourself? Describe yourself to me.”
Me? Well, I'm nothing special. I've got brownish-blond hair, and it's a little long. But I like it that way. I've got blue eyes. And... Yeah. I look pretty normal. I'm a little small. I'm five foot five, and I weigh about 138 pounds. So yeah, I'm scrawny. But that isn't so bad, right? I'm still growing, at least.
I'm more proud of my intellect. I'm smart. Mostly because I work hard, but I guess some of it could be natural. I'm a little quiet, and I've been called anti-social. That doesn't really bother me. I mean, a lot of kids are just... stupid. I'm smart, and I don't like spending time with a lot of them. They can be tiring to deal with. So, I don't spend a lot of time with them. Unless they can prove that they're worth being friends with, then I don't care for it. I guess I'm a little shy. I don't like approaching people. But is that bad? I don't talk to strangers, at least.
“Other then the reason your here, at Blackwood Academy, have you had any other issues with law enforcement?”
I've never done anything to get in trouble before. I don't like making trouble. So, I guess that could be why everyone was so surprised that I ended up here. I mean, I never even skipped school. Nothing wrong. No cheating on tests, no joy rides, no fighting with anyone... It was just the theft that got me here. Nothing else. I guess you could call me a wimp.
“What is the worst thing you’ve done? Why did you feel the need to do that?”
The worst thing I've done? I... I don't know. I mean... I've never gotten into any fights. Never cheated on a test. I've never even called someone a name to be mean...Actually, the worst thing I've ever done was stealing a book from a library. I guess I'm sorry for that. It was a good book, though. It was about some archaeological finds in Turkey. It was awesome. I still have it. It's pretty worn now. I've read it a few times.
"What the one things you're most proud of?"
What am I most proud of? That's actually pretty easy. My brain. How smart I can be. I work hard, and study a lot, so I'm proud of that. There isn't much more for me to be proud of. I mean, that's all I've really done. Getting into advanced classes, scoring well on tests... That's what I do. It's what I'm good at. It's all that I'm good at.
"Other then your trouble with law enforcement, do you have any vices or addictions?"
Vices and addictions? Um... No? I mean, I don't drink. It kills brain cells, and can stunt mental development. So, no there. I can't smoke, because of my asthma. It'd trigger an attack, I think. And I don't like drugs. They kill brain cells too. And since all I'm good at is being smart, I'm not giving those up. But... Does the internet count? I really like procrastinating on the internet when I have time. It's my biggest time waster. I think that's it, though.
“If you could change one thing about your life what would it be?”
Well... It's not exactly my life, you know? But... I'd change my big brother, Liam, getting sent here. He didn't deserve it. He's a good guy, really. And he makes mistakes, like everyone else. If he wasn't sent here, I wouldn't have done what I did. I just wanted to be with my big brother. That isn't so bad, is it?
“What criminal act got you sent here and who recommended it?”
The criminal act that got me sent here was theft. I stole five thousand dollars worth of jewelry from a department store. I didn't want it for myself, and I didn't need the money. I just wanted to get caught so I could come here! It might sound stupid, but... Throughout my whole life, I've been able to count on Liam. No matter what happened. I couldn't let him be somewhere like this on his own! So, I had to come here, so I could have his back, like he's always had mine. Anyway, the judge that sent Liam here recommended it for me too. I'm glad that she did. I don't know what I would have done if she'd sent me to some juvenile detention center. I'd be killed there.
“Do think that you deserve to be here?”
Well, yeah. I mean, I purposely got sent here. I stole from a store so I'd get caught and be sent here. I'm pretty much text book definition 'deserves to be here'. My brother doesn't deserve to be here, though. So, I do. He doesn't. If that makes sense.
"Tell me about your life before Blackwood Academy contacted you, what led up to your stay here."
Well, er... It all started when I was born, I suppose. My father and mother already had one other child, my older brother, Liam. We lived in Essex, which is near London. My dad drank. A lot. He used to beat on my mom, and sometimes Liam and I if we were around to incur his wrath. When I was nine, Liam stood up to him, and he hurt him, bad. So, Mom left him, and we stayed with our grandparents for a bit. Eventually, though, we moved to Boston, and have lived there since.
My life is pretty simple, you know? I don't like parties. I don't drink, or do drugs. I just study. I always have. When I was a kid, and my dad was hurting my mom, I'd go hide with a book. I'd read, and pretend it wasn't happening. It may not have been the best coping method, but it worked for me. It also helped make me as cool as I am today. Except I'm not cool, so whatever. I always got good grades, since I started school. Mom was always proud of that, and so was Liam. I guess them being proud of me pushed me to work harder. And so I did. I studied, and worked hard, and got to the top of my class, and have stayed there ever since. And... That's my life in a nutshell.
