Riley couldn't be surprised by Anthony's reaction. Most kids didn't trust her, trust was something to be earned. But just because he didn't believe her, didn't mean she was going to try any less hard. As much as she wanted the trust to be instantaneous, she had learned early on in her teaching career that that wasn't usually the case, and it took time and effort to build it. She could only hope that she could do something to help and not let him down.
She smiled “ Why would you believe me? Doesn't matter though, think what you want, it';s not going to change what I do.” she looked at him, her eyes serious, though he was no longer making eye contact with her. “ You don't need to ask for my opinion or help, but please, for the sake of Pixel's and the child's health, get her checked out, ok?” She looked down to her hands and to the work sheet there. Didn't seem like the most important thing anymore, filling out the worksheet. She handed the paper back to him, a smile back on her face. “ You've got a lot on your mind right now. How about this one time, I'll give you a pass on the assignment. You go spend some time with Pixel. Just make sure you do well on the next one, ok? she said with a nod.

Anthony kept his eyes on the paper. He still didn't much like history. No matter how nice Riley seemed to be. And he was doing his hardest not to trust her. Trust only lead to hurt and disappointment in a kids life like his. And that's how they got through without being hurt. They didn't trust and they didn't want things in life. That's what kept them from getting hurt. And Anthony hated that vulnerable feeling.
Then she was telling him for Pixels sake to get her checked out. Which again meant telling someone of higher authority and he was scared to do so. He loved Pixel and he doesn't want to be separated from her. But he didn't want something to be wrong either. So he would do his best to talk her into getting looked at. Then when she said she would give him a pass on the homework he looked back to her. She wanted him to go spend some time with Pixel. "I'm virtually failing your class .. why would you give me a pass on anything?" It was true he was pretty much failing her class

Riley shrugged when he asked the question, really, it wasn't exactly responsible, or fair for the other students, and she knew that, but this was a very different situation. He was struggling with more than school work at the moment, and it was an added stress that certainly couldn't be helping him. She felt bad for him, and depending on the headmaster, she wasn't really sure what the future would end up holding for him and his girl. Maybe she was sentimental, but she would hate for stress to ruin the time they had together. Not that Anthony seemed overly stressed he was failing her classes, but the point remained.
She could make up a reason, she doubted the boy wanted any pity, but she would rather just be honest about her reasons, hopefully they would resonate with him as being true, and he would be a little less suspicious of her. “ Honestly, I feel bad. You seem to be taking this in stride. But if I can help out by taking off even a little bit of stress. I will. You talked a lot tonight, even if you don't know why you told me any of it, and believe me, I know, sometimes just talking about things can be the biggest source of stress. So I'll give you a pass this time. Let yourself relax. ” She smiled “ It's kinda a test of good faith. I'll let this go, and hopefully next time, if you have troubles with an assignment, or anything, you can come talk to me, and we'll see what we can do to get it sorted.”

Anthony frowned some while she was speaking. She felt sorry for him. He didn't need pity. Sure a little guidance maybe but not pity. He hated it when people felt sorry for him. It made him feel like he couldn't handle what was in front of him. And he could handle this as long as the headmaster didn't split him and Pixel up. He did however like her saying he could have some extra time with Pixel. He did really miss her.
Then she was saying something about him coming and talking to her if he had any trouble. That made him laugh a little. It was a small tiny laugh. "Don't get your hopes up. I'm not a talker even when I like you .. Even less so when I don't like you. But thanks for giving me a little extra time to spend with Pixel. I do miss her." He put his history book back in his bag and then took the worksheet from her hand and put it in there too just incase he decided not to take the pass. Then he stood up. "I guess I'll see you in class"

Riley smiled as he stood up “ Yeah, you strike me as the strong silent type. But the offer is still there if you need it.” she said with a nod. “Enjoy the evening Anthony, and we'll see you next class.” she said. She hoped he would take her up on her offer, though like he said, she wouldn't hold her breath. She just hoped when the time came that he needed help, he wouldn't be too proud to ask. She glanced down at her watch. The half hour she allotted herself for dinner was up, and it was time to go back to her class to finish up with the papers she was grading. With a sigh, she stood up, retrieving her purse from the other side of the hall. She gave Anthony a small wave before setting off down the hall back to her classroom for another long night of work.
