DUNCANDOUGLASMACDONALD
“Well, tell me a little about yourself. What’s your name?â€
I'm Duncan Douglas MacDonald, but most of my friends call me Dun or Dune. I was named after my grandfather, and my mother's husband. That's always seemed a little weird to me, but I guess it was her decision. I never got a chance to ask her why those names, but I don't know if she would have told me anyway. From what my dad has told me, she was a very secretive woman.
“Next question, how has your High School career gone thus far?â€
School was okay, when I wasn't skipping. Really, it was pretty boring. Small town high school... Just what you'd expect, you know? Most of the kids aren't ever going to get out of town, and those that do will probably never look back. That's what I wanted to do. Get the hell out of dodge, you know? I was pretty close, too. Junior year... One more to go, and then I was free. It's not like I'd be going to college, though. I mean, maybe an art school... But that's only if Dad's willing to pay my way in. I definitely don't get good enough grades for a good school. He's always been kind of disappointed in me for that. I'm the dumb son, the one that isn't going to make it far in life. But that's just my dad. He's a bit of a downer.
“What did you do when you weren't in school? Any hobbies or sports, anything like that?â€
Well, I wasn't in school a lot. I don't enjoy it, so I usually don't go. But I spent a lot of time in the barn, outside my house. I could smoke, get high or drunk, or whatever else, and no one would know. The barn was supposed to be a play area for all of us kids, but none of my siblings or cousins ever really got into it. They all preferred playing outside, I guess.
Anyway, besides the barn, there were the usual places. I mean, there wasn't a mall or anything in town, but there was a lake, on my family's property. A lot of the kids from school would just go and hang out at it. When it was warm enough, we could swim, and when it wasn't we could set up campfires and hang out. Most of our entertainment was self made.
I guess that's how I got into sculpting. I'm not some artistic weirdo. I just like to put things together, to create things. Most of my sculptures are made with scrap metal. My uncle Keenan is a mechanic, so he has plenty of access to it, and gets me supplies. Otherwise, I use whatever works for the sculpture. There are about two dozen big sculptures I've made, and they sit out in this old greenhouse, that my mom lets me use as my studio. I spent more time in the greenhouse than I did anywhere else. It was my space. No one ever intruded on it.
“Family and friends are pretty important. Tell me about them. How are your relationships with them?â€
My family is pretty important to me. Even if we don't always get along... I've got a big family, though. I'll just skip the little details, and tell you the important bits. First, you have my parents. Mom and Dad. My birth mom died when I was a baby, but Mom adopted me when she married Dad. She's great. The best mom in the world, if you ask me. My dad is okay too. He and I don't really get along, but he tries. My Dad had another kid before me, my sister, E.J. Eej is pretty cool, even if she is a teacher. She's super into helping people and stuff, which is great for her. She loves it, so whatever. She's about eight years older than I am, and before Dad married Mom, she took care of me. Even after that, she did. She's pretty amazing.
Eej is my only older sibling, but I have seven younger siblings. First is Angus, and he's eleven. He's okay, but he's a total rat when it comes to getting me into trouble. Then it's Flora. Flo. She's my favorite. Even though she's only ten, she's the coolest little sister ever. She's always followed me around, but not in a bad way. More of in a 'you're my hero' way. It's awesome. After Flo, it's Alasdair, and then Greer. Alas is eight, and Greer is seven. Bowie is next, at five, and then it's Ewan at four, and Iona is the baby, at only three. We're a big family, and even though things are always crazy, we've always been happy. Everyone loves each other, I guess. Even if I do get annoyed when Gus rats me out.
I've got more family, a bunch of uncles and aunts and cousins, but that'd take too long to explain, you know? So, I'll skip to the friends. I've got a few, but none that really stand out. No one that would keep me in town after graduation. I used to have a girlfriend. Georgie. We used to get high together and stuff... But then she got pregnant. I told her to stay clean during the pregnancy, but she couldn't. When our son was born... He barely made it. He's still in and out of the hospital, because Georgie messed him up. My parents are taking care of him, though. His name is Sage. He's going to be a good kid. Better than his mom or I were.
“Thank you for sharing that with me. So those are your family and friends, what about yourself? Describe yourself to me.â€
You wanna know about me? I'm a skinny ginger kid. I've got red hair and greenish-blue eyes. I'm pale, obviously. I burn up in the sun. I used to get teased at school because I always had to put on some kind of sunblock so I wouldn't burn. I'm not weak, though. I had chores to help out with on the farm, and in my free time, I sculpted with pieces of scrap metal. It was hard, but it generally turned out how I wanted it to. I've gotten pretty good at welding, too. There are a few scars on my hands and arms from burning myself when I wasn't so good, but I don't mind. They make me seem more interesting.
Besides that, I don't know what you'd want to know about me. I like sculpting. Before I was here, I liked spending time with Flo and Sage. I've not seen Georgie since the custody hearing, but I heard she got arrested on drug charges. She's in prison now. I guess I'm lucky to be here, instead of that. Still wish I was home, though. Nothing that can be made here will compare to Mom's cooking. I'm going to starve.
“Other then the reason your here, at Blackwood Academy, have you had any other issues with law enforcement?â€
Not really. I mean, the sheriff back home rarely did anything when kids were getting into trouble. Unless someone did something seriously bad, he didn't interfere. I didn't do anything violent. Yeah, I used drugs, but it was mostly weed. Sometimes other stuff, it I was at a party or something. But I didn't do anything that would get him involved. Anyone that did was kind of screwed, because that was the level of stupid they'd reached.
