Amaya was born to a very young mother, her father tells her- 14. Her father was 19 when she was born. Her mother was nowhere near ready for the responsibilities of motherhood, and the duty of parenting the girl often fell on her grandparents, as her father wasn't quit grown up yet either. Amaya has very happy memories of the times she spent at her grandparents' house- cooking with her Abuela, swinging, going to the park, shopping for new clothes and toys.
Unfortunately, that all changed when Amaya was seven and her formerly absent father showed up to take her away. Don't think Amaya didn't love her father; she idolized him with the blind adoration that only a child can feel. She was simply ignorant of her father's problems- his drug addiction, his many girlfriends. She moved in with her father, who lived only a few miles away but in a completely different environment. Amaya was used to quiet neighborhoods with green lawns, white houses, small children playing on sidewalks. In her father's apartment complex, there was only cracked cement and broken swingsets.
Amaya often wondered about her mother, but the few times she dared to ask her father he gruffly told her not to worry about it, her mama was just busy. Although she had no memories of her and had seen only a few pictures of the young girl with hair and eyes exactly like her own, Amaya felt her absence acutely.
Moving in with her father was the turning point in her life. Before that, she had been a sweet, sheltered child; had never even seen anyone smoke a cigarette before. Now she saw crack-heads on street corners, tired women in skimpy clothing walking the streets at night. She watched through a crack in the door as her father snorted lines and smoked blunts. She was shocked at first, but soon accepted it simply as a matter of course.
It wasn't long before she was talking like the other children, using bad grammar and slang that her grandparents would have been shocked to know she even knew the meaning of. Her father made a slight attempt at being a good parent at first, but soon left Amaya to her own devices. He did, however, shower her with affection and they became very close. As she grew older, she left behind more and more of her grandparent's teachings.
By 7th grade, she was smoking cigarettes and wearing short shorts like the other girls. She pilfered weed from her father's stash and got high as a little kite with her friends. She got suspended quite a few times, missed a lot of school, and barely passed that year. Her father giggled with her like he was her own age at her stories of telling off the teachers.
And so Amaya lived a very different life than she should have, had she stayed with her grandparents. She never felt the loss though, never stopped to think where she could be. She accepted things as they were and did not wonder "what if...?"
She dropped out of school the second she turned sixteen and spent her days walking the streets, getting new tattoos now that school rules did not stand in her way, and got high. Oh, did she get high. Amaya took after her father in that respect- she had a very addictive personality. She preferred downers to uppers, unlike her father, and soon she had to pop a few lortabs or xanax every day to function.
Her partying came to an end the night she got caught breaking into somebody's house. After this, her father decided that she was simply out of control, and sent her to B.A.D.
