inside their life and mind;; If one was to ask Arthur J. Churchill about the early years of his life, he wouldn't have many pleasant things to say about his family. From the time he was born, he had a nanny assigned to his care, and after birth, he rarely saw his mother, or his father. One of the first times he ever spent time with his family, he was four years old, and was taken to an event his father was hosting for the employees and families of the hospital he was benefactor to.
This party was a changing point in Arthur's life. It was there that he met his life-long best friend, Henry Baker. Through out the many trials of his life, Henry has stuck with him, loyal and true. (Kinda like a dog, but able to talk back.) As Arthur was passed from nanny to nanny, rarely seeing his parents or three older brothers, he came to be very lonely, the only person consistently there for him being Henry.
When he was twelve, he slept over at Henry's house for the first time, and got to know his family. For the first time, he felt like he was part of a family. He began spending as much time with Henry's family as he could. Even if their family wasn't as well off as his, he felt like they were far luckier than his, because they all loved each other so much.
His teen years were spent making mischief with Henry, and spending as much time with the Baker's as he could. Even now, as an adult, he considers them to be his family more than his real family. Life was good for him, he thought, during those few years.
Then, they got into university, and everything changed. Henry met the love of his life, Naomi, and Arthur met his first love. Her name was Catherine, and she was beautiful. Her major was journalism, and she hoped to change the world someday. They got married quickly - they were only nineteen at the time of the wedding - and it didn't take long for things to go downhill.
After court ordered therapy, Catherine was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Her behavior towards her husband was rarely positive, and often violent. For two years, their marriage was violent and miserable for both parties. Shortly after his twenty-first birthday, though, Arthur got some of the most devastating news of his life. After a particularly bad fight, Catherine revealed that she was pregnant - and that the child wasn't his. The father was his oldest brother, Leon. It crushed Arthur. Leon, of all his brothers, had been the cruelest to him as a child. It was painful for him to think that he was the father of the child that should have been his.
Even so, he was thankful when the child was born healthy. It was a boy, and, to dig the wound even deeper, Catherine named him after Arthur, calling him 'Little A.J.'. Unfortunately, Catherine's mental state was still fragile, and in a fit of rage, nearly killed her son. Custody of him was an issue for a while - Arthur and Catherine were not divorced yet, as she was trying to coerce him into staying with her - and his biological father had no interest in raising a child.
Taking a stand, Arthur left Catherine, and got custody of A.J. Raising a child on his own wasn't easy by any means, but he was determined to do it. Even if A.J. wasn't his biological child, he considered himself to be his father. Tragedy struck just months after Arthur had gotten permanent custody of his son. Despite attempts from Arthur to get her help, Catherine resisted, and took her own life. Yet again, Arthur was crushed. Despite all of the pain and misery she'd put him through, he loved her, and losing her was quite a blow.
Life moved on, as it does, and Arthur kept pushing himself through school, getting a teaching job, and taking the best care of his son that he could. When he was twenty-eight, he met his second wife, Penelope. She was nothing like Catherine. Sweet, kind, and the most beautiful woman he'd ever met. She had an unearthly beauty, and many times, Arthur found himself wondering why she was with him.
Unfortunately, she apparently had the same thoughts, and shortly after their wedding, a year after they met, they found out she was pregnant. At first, Arthur thought that perhaps this child would be his. However, after a check up with his doctor, he found out that he was in fact infertile. After confronting Penelope, she told him the truth - she'd been seduced by Leon as well.
This second betrayal crushed Arthur. At a family dinner, he confronted his brother about it. The rift between himself and his family only deepened when his parents sided with Leon, rather than him.
Arthur divorced Penelope, and when she told him there was no way she could care for a child on her own, Leon refusing to claim responsibility, he adopted her son. As soon as the paperwork was finalized, she was gone, and out of their lives. Now Arthur was struggling to raise two children, the now eight year old A.J., and newborn Oliver.
It was four years before he heard from Penelope again. She'd gotten pregnant again, and had a daughter this time. Still unable to raise a child on her own, she asked Arthur if he could take care of her. Unable to refuse, he adopted the little girl, named Madeleine. It was soon after this that Henry had his own daughter, Beatrice.
When Henry moved to the states, it didn't take long for Arthur to follow. He'd cut off ties with his family years before, when they'd sided with Leon rather than him. In the states, he didn't know anyone besides Henry, and while Henry went to work at Blackwood, he found himself a job as assistant principal at a private school in New York. A.J. was now fourteen, and had gotten in with a bad group of kids after the move.
When his son got into trouble, Arthur mentioned Blackwood to the lawyer defending him, and was thankful when he convinced the judge to send A.J. to the school. Soon after, Arthur applied for a job at Blackwood, and was hired as the Deputy Head. It's been a year since then, and his family has adjusted well, he thinks.
