CARMEN
ALEJANDRAORTEGA“Why the Blackwood Academy for Delinquents? Why do you want to work with troubled youth?”
The woman smiled, a mere upwards quirk of her lips, and shrugged a bit. "Why not? I spent eleven years working as an adult psychiatrist, with normal adult patients. I got bored, really. It was constantly the same thing: I lost my job, my boyfriend/girlfriend broke up with me, I'm going through a nasty divorce... I felt like I'd heard it all. Nothing surprised me anymore. I was starting to feel jaded... So, I decided that a change in pace was necessary. I thought that working with youth would be nice, and a friend pointed me towards Blackwood. It was really that simple."
“So you are applying for the psychiatrist opening here at the Blackwood Academy for Delinquents. How long have you worked in that field? Why that job?..”
"I've been a psychiatrist for fifteen years now... Dios mio, I sound old when I say that." The woman covered her mouth as she laughed, face lighting up in amusement. "Anyway, I chose to be a psychiatrist because... It interested me, really. How the human mind works? What makes it tick? But medicine wasn't quite my speed. The sight or smell of blood makes me nauseous. So, psychiatry was the next best thing, you know? I loved learning all about it, and I really can't imagine doing anything else. I love my job."
“What can you offer the school?”
Shrugging minutely, she thought for a minute before answering. "I've got fifteen years of experience. I should think that's a good place to start. Besides that... Well, I enjoy my job. Not everyone in my field can say that. I genuinely enjoy helping others come to conclusions about their mental state that they wouldn't otherwise come to. I care about every one of my patients, no matter how rarely I see them or how difficult they are. I do understand that I can't help all of them, but I do try. I've always been of the opinion that if you offer help, and it's accepted, you've already won half the battle."
“How do you think you present yourself to people?”
"Well, I like to think I present myself as a professional. I try to be polite and kind to all I meet, though I do know that I do have my 'harpy' moments. At least, according to my ex-husband. He also said that I thought too much about my work, and not enough about him and his needs. I don't think that's true, but then again, I do know that I can be a bit of a workaholic. I've let patients stay with me before, if I knew they needed a safe place to sleep. I see nothing wrong with it, though he had a problem with it." Clearing her throat, she shook her head. "Anyway, besides that... I'm a forty year old Latina woman. I've got dark hair and eyes, a natural tan... I look a lot like my mother did at my age. I've been told that I'm attractive, and I like to think that I am. I do keep myself in shape... I'm not old enough to be off the market yet, after all."
“Have you ever had any problems with the law? Why did you quit your last job?”
Humming, she thought for a moment. "Problems with the law? None that I can think of. A few speeding tickets, but nothing beyond that. I do remember there being some issues with immigration when I was a teenager, mostly because my mother was from Argentina. That didn't really have anything to do with me, besides them asking me a lot of questions. It was a very stressful time for my family, especially since I was going through college applications at the time. As for quitting my last job, I said that earlier. I had gotten bored with the same old problems adults faced. None of them had anything that I hadn't seen before, and most of what I was doing was prescribing medicine, and telling them things they already knew. So, I decided I needed a change in pace. I set them all up with new psychiatrists, who could pick up helping them where I left off, and I came here. I have yet to regret that decision."
