Meet Olivia Pendle. This is a woman who has never, by any stretch of the imagination, had what you would call a hard life. She was born and raised in San Antonio Texas, the youngest child and only daughter to Henderson Pendle, an oil exec who spent most of his time down in Houston rather than at home. She has two older brothers, and while none of them would say they were ever particularly close, they did manage to get along quite nicely. Her childhood was one of excess. With her father's incredibly high paying job, the Pendle family was used to the best of the best. It's not surprising, that even well into her adulthood, Olivia is still a little spoiled.
Growing up, she also had the distinct advantage of being beautiful. Sometimes it really isn't fair and some people catch all the breaks. Being Texas and all, her mother had her face made up and hair puffed out and had young Olivia entered into pageant after pageant. We're talking toddlers and tiaras full blown here. By the time the young princess reached high school, she decided there were more important things than winning trophies for being pretty and looking good in a bikini. She dropped out of the pageant circuit when she was 16, deciding the only crown she really needed was the homecoming one.
When she stopped focusing all her energy on winning stupid beauty contests, something else started to become clear, which honestly, no one in her family had really expected. Olivia was smart. Like, wicked smart. Underneath all the teased blonde hair and eyelash extensions there was a brain, and one that would take her far if she wanted it. Her marks started to skyrocket up as she actually started focusing on school. She graduated top of her class, and as an added bonus, was prom queen. It would seem nice, for all those people who struggled throughout highschool, who had that pretty, mean girl, making their life hell, to say that Olivia peaked in high school, and that her life was a mess as she got older.
Unfortunately, things were still smooth sailing. Olivia started at Texas A and M, and though her first year was a bit of a scattered mess, not having a major, drinking and partying a little too much, she settled down and ended up getting her English Lit degree. What she discovered in college, well, other than her skankiness increased proportionately to the number of tequila shots she downed, was that she really loved books, and reading and literature. Both her parents assumed she'd do the mandatory 4 year stint in college, come home with a useless degree, like most of the population. But Olivia found something she really loved. She was looking into master's level english Lit programs, when she came across the Librarian program. Up until then, she'd had no clue that it required a masters degree to be a librarian (true story, I was shocked ). What else could be more perfect? So she picked a school that was without a doubt the best (of course she did) and applied for the Masters program.
She was accepted easily, and left Texas for the chilly north. She arrived at Harvard ready to go. Much like any college student anywhere, she was still a bit of a partier, and at one such party, she met another Master's student, though this one was in for Math, Andy Bones. Now, you have to understand something about Olivia. She was young, rich, smart, and gorgeous. Nothing had ever, EVER been denied to her. She was used to getting what she wanted, when she wanted. And one look at the chuck wearing math major, and she knew she wanted him. And, to no one's surprise, she got him. A few times really. Whenever she ran into him at a party, or one memorable time in the back of the library.
The thing was though, Olivia, not to sound conceited, was used to guys not only bending to her whim, but mostly just bending in general and becoming infatuated with her. One of her sorority sisters had nick named her 'Kryptonite' since that's what she was for most guys. A nice combination of looks, brains, and an almost constant air of 'out of your league' mixed with a dash of southern hospitality and manners, seemed to have most of them hooked. She'd had no less than 12 marriage proposals in her freshman year at A and M, and sad thing is, not all of them were just drunken ramblings. Andy though, he was different. Not only did he remain indifferent to her charms, he just seemed to get bored with it, and after a the handful of hookups, stopped paying attention to her entirely. I drove Olivia nuts. Who did he think he was? He was ignoring her? It was supposed to be the other way around. And for the first time in her life, Olivia was the one who was starting to feel a bit infatuated.
For the next few months, she tried, in vain, to get Andy to pay her attention again, but aside from a few nods passing on the grounds or a couple minutes of conversation at parties, it was useless. Instead of discouraging her more, it became almost a challenge to Olivia, her stubborn nature just didn't want to let it drop. When Andy graduated a year before her, she gave up. Aside from facebook, she was out of touch with the enigmatic young man, and somehow, he'd managed to come out on top. This both infuriated and intrigued her, and yes, she couldn't help but fall into the cycle of facebook stalking like so many other girls before her.
Things in her last year at Harvard were more normal for her, she got her degree, with expected high grades, and she headed back to Texas, where she put her degree to use at the Baylor university. She wasn't making tones of money, but luckily her trust fund came in when she finished school, so really, she didn't need much money from work to begin with. She continued to... shall we say, keep tabs on Mr. Bones, he was the one that got away after all. She was happy in her job and all, but was still occasionally would find herself creeping through his FB pages. When she saw that he had moved and changed jobs to some weird little school in Oklahoma, she couldn't help but check it out, wondering why he'd change from a nice, upper class private school to some delinquents center. She came across the fact that they were looking for a Librarian, and without really thinking, she dusted off her resume and sent it in. Not like there was going to be tons of competetion in back water Oklahoma. When she was contacted by BAD and got the position, she wasn't entirely sure it was the smartest move, but she took it, and started at the school.
