& I WAKE UP EVERY EVENING
WITH A BIG SMILE ON MY FACE
( and it never seems out of place )
[/center]Sophia ran her fingers through her hair, her nails pulling out the tangles she had gotten from running. After running around the track for a good half hour, she needed a serious break. To her, the stairs were the perfect place to relax and cool off. Most of her mates would go back to their dorm rooms and take a nap to be away from people and noise. But for Sophia, noise was just what she liked. The silence was too annoying and in a way, distracting. When everything was silent, Sophia's mind wandered and she didn't like thinking about things when it seemed unnecessary. When everything was loud and noisy, she could only think about one thing at a time -if she could even think at all- and she could relax.
Sophia trudged up the stairs, waving at a few people she passed by, but otherwise making a steady pace up to the top. There, she stretched and sat down on one of the steps, leaning back and stretching out to take up the space of about 10 steps. She didn’t care if she ever got in anyone’s way since people seldom came up there. And when they did, all she had to do was shift over to let them pass. Today though, she was too tired from her run to even stop from yawning every few moments. Finally, she let herself close her eyes and drift to sleep.
Sophia didn’t have dreams. Not that she could remember anyway. Nightmares, sure; most people remembered their nightmares. But too Sophia, if she had any dreams at all, she wasn’t aware of them by the time she woke up. This time though, it was caught between a dream and a nightmare. She was sitting on her front porch steps, trying to get her twin brothers to stop fighting. This was odd since they never fought with each other. When Sophia finally pulled them apart, the smaller of the two, Jared, suddenly turned and shouted at her. ”It’s all your fault! If you hadn’t left to that stupid school, we wouldn’t be like this.” She stared at them, bewilderment and hurt coursing through her. Even her favorite of the twins, Greg -who’d always looked up to her as if she could do no wrong- was scowling at her. She wanted to ask how they knew that and what they were talking about, but she could feel herself slipping away. Not being a heavy sleeper, Sophia woke with a start when she heard someone running up the stairs. She quickly dried the tears that had escaped her eyes during her dream and sat up, waiting for the rushing person to probably crash into her, or maybe they would just zoom past and ignore her.
