“Why did you decide to go into teaching?”
Ah lets see. I really love music. I did some gigs in local places while I went to school. Wrote my own music. I guess, the reason I became a teacher was to instill the love for music in kids like it was and still is in me. To help them find their strengths and to build up their weaknesses so that they can become great musicians.I love to watch kids sing and play intruments, I always see such great talent in kids and I just really want to help them.
“What can you offer the school?”
Well I can offer you a music teacher for one. A band and Choir director. Um I can offer these kids guidance. I might still be young myself but I find that kids trust people closer to their age group and I can still understand where they're coming from as well. Also for teenage kids, music is a big part of their lives, its a great way to express themselves. Also I'm pretty good with sports and I can coach a baseball team.
“Why do you want to work with troubled youth?”
I think these kids, records and problems aside are just regular kids. They grew up with different circumstances then maybe you or I and I'd like to show them that not every adult is out to get them. Also I'd like to show them that they're worth something to someone, even if its only you and I. Does that make sense?
“How long have you been teaching? What subjects have you taught? Where was the last place you taught?”
Well, I did a year of being a TA. Or teachers assistant. It was sort of like shadowing a teacher but not really at the same time. I got to teach some classes and give some one on one help to the students, like I would here if presented the opportunity. Um then I spent one year actually teaching at a public school in kentucky. Where I grew up. And that was the last place I tought. And obviously I was teaching music there also.
“How do you project yourself to students? How do you think your coworkers will see you? How do you see yourself?”
I'd like to say I'm pretty charasmatic. I like to think out side the box and do things that someone wouldn't ordinarily do. I think the students and I if given a chance to warm up to me would get along pretty well. I like to do a lot of hands on teaching. Mostly I leave the text book out of it. I find I like the students creativity more then what the books have to say. My co workers would probably see me as a huge kid. I love to have fun. They might see me as a little rebellious as well. But I like to keep things interesting. It keeps the students attention.
“What is the worst decision you have made during your teaching career?”
Ah .. hmm the worst mistake. If I tell you about the worst thing I've done will it make a difference in whether you hire me? I passed a student when I obviously shouldn't have. Her test grade were horrible and she never showed up for concers and she hardly ever participated in class. But Music wasn't her thing, she wasn't taking the class because she liked it, it was because its what her parents wanted for her so I passed her because really she wasn't a bad person, she just didn't have that passion for music. So the school board decided to let me go for that. Said they couldn't have a teacher who passed kids who didn't earn it And that's why I'm looking for a job.
“Tell me a little about your life before coming to B.A.D.”
Ah well lets see. I was raised by both of my parents. Still happily married to this day. We were a church going family. And thats where my love for music started. I used to sing in the choir and my parents sing in the choir. And then I started picking up instruments and learning how to play them. When I got to highschool I started play sports and singing in the choir. I found I really enjoyed baseball and singing music. And I got scholarships to go to school. But I wanted to be a famous singer, what teenager doesn't want that. But my parents talked me into going on to college, saying that if it was meant to be I could be famous afterwards.
I went to college at the university of Texas. I wanted to get away from home and explore other places and I got in there. It was there I also met a girl I sort of like, Liked is a better word. We share a kid. He's six she had him when I was nineteen. He currently lives with her and I get to see him every couple of months right now. But then we dated seriously and had a kid together. We never got married or anything. Once I got my degree in teaching I moved back to Kentucky. I got a job as a TA. And I bought a small house, so that when my son came to visit he'd have his own room and a yard to play in. And then once I finished as a TA I moved on to teaching at a different school in the same area.
After I got fired I started sending applications out to people and you were the one that called. So that brings us to now. I hope the interview was as good as I hoped for it to be. I'd really like to help these kids. And being here is that much closer to my son. He and Jane live in the area and I'd like to be able to stick around and be a good father to him.
